TWD: Chunky Peanut Butter and Oatmeal Chocolate Chipsters

I have to say, I'm liking the trend of cookies.  Cookies are good.  Cookies are generally easy.Cookies tend to use fewer dishes.  Cookies are nice little bites that make me feel less guilty than when I eat a whole piece of pie or cake.  Of course, that only works when I don't eat half a dozen cookies, but I digress.

When I looked at the recipe (chosen by Stefany of Proceed with Caution), I thought it looked familiar.  I couldn't remember if I had made them previously.  I hoped that I hadn't, because these sounded really good, and I wanted them to be memorable.

Turns out I had made them before.  I tend to write in my cookbooks.  Hey, they're my books.  This one was "just ok" according to my notes.  I played around a little more this time.  Or at least I meant to.  I cut the recipe in half.  That usually messes with me a little.  According to some of the other TWDers, there was too much cinnamon.  I meant to cut it in half.  However, that would have meant half of the half I had already cut, and I didn't do it.  I substituted dark chocolate m & ms for the chips.  (On a side note:  I really like dark chocolate m & ms.  They are really good.  Really good right out of the freezer, too)

The cookies are good, but they aren't great.  If they are called "peanut butter cookies", I expect more peanut butter taste.  I don't know that I'll make these again to play around, but perhaps some peanut butter chips might improve things.  And definitely less cinnamon.  It's the predominant flavor.

I do have two "versions" because I used two techniques.  For some of the batch, I rolled the dough into balls.  For the rest of the batch, I dropped.  No difference.  The rolled ones are neater.  I just got lazy.

Rolled:

Dropped:

Both:

Up next week:  Chocolate Whopper Malted Drops chosen by Rachel of Confessions of a Tangerine Tart.  I have been ANXIOUSLY awaiting this recipe.  The Whoppers have been on the counter for a couple of weeks.  My children look daily to see if the container has been opened.  I even went and ordered malted milk powder from King Arthur Flour just to make these cookies.  That's quite a build up.  Stay tuned!

Cookies are always great, unfortunately we don't have such great munchie jars I found in Ireland here in Germany.

Great colourful cookies"

M&Ms are a good idea. It would have added color to the all-brown ingredient list, and it would have probably made the chocolate more prevalent in my final cookies. I like 'em. Wish I knew I could be lazy and drop the little buggers!

I absolutely, wholeheartedly agree with your review of this recipe. I think "just okay" sums them up perfectly. Not enough peanut butter, too much cinnamon - or something. Yours sure look pretty though! I have a sneaking suspicion that the chocolate malted whopper drops will not disappoint us!

I write in my cookbooks with the date I first made the recipe and my evaluation. In pencil though. I actually like the looks of your dropped version better!

I made a few changes. The best one was to sub some of the butter for more peanut butter. I'd have done 4 T, but I ran out of peanut butter and made do with 2.5.

Sorry they weren't your favorite. I agree that more prominent peanut butter flavor would have been nice.

I write in my cookbooks too, usually a date and a quick review. Sorry these weren't a favorite for you. I liked them but doubt we will make them again, too many other recipes out there to try. I am excited about next week's cookie, I special ordered malted milk powder too (from amazon). Can't wait to give that recipe a try!

Good looking cookies - the dropped one looks the best to me, chunky with loks of crevices for holding milk. Nice work. I also hope next weeks TWD is yummy.

As much as I would like to write on my cookbooks, I just can't (must keep them in perfect condition.. haha). I always end up with a book full of post-its instead. I love how you compared both the rolled and dropped because I'm always wondering what is the best way to bake cookies. I baked half rolled and half flattened in case my cookies don't spread and get too chunky and thick.

I agree... "just okay." But thats nice that you showed us how they came out differently depending on the shape you baked them in! Very cool!

I always get a blob of something on my cookbook pages. A little dab of butter, chocolate, something I drip across there. Yours must be much neater since you write in them! :) I love the M & M idea.

I looooove dark chocolate M&Ms. The dark chocolate peanut ones are fab too! I don't usually love M&Ms in cookies (the candy shell tastes funky after baking to me) but I might change my mind for dark M&Ms. Good idea!

Great looking cookies! I think the rolled look the best, but they are both delicious looking.
