TWD: Sour Cream Chocolate Cake Cookies

I had some high hopes for these cookies. Dorie describes them as plain looking but with a taste that brings you back for cookie after cookie. They are more cake than cookie. They are also more sweet tasting than any distinct flavor.

These were a bit of a disappointment to me. I wanted them to be more... something. There wasn't enough chocolate to make them a rich chocolate cookie. There wasn't enough nutmeg or cinnamon to make them a chocolate spice cookie. The sour cream made the cookies tender, but I didn't feel it added to the taste.

They were very easy to make. And if you don't already have a mini ice cream scoop (I used my 1 T. scoop), you should buy one. They were also good as a vehicle for other foods. (Strawberry rhubarb vanilla compote for one) Having said that, I don't think these will be made in my kitchen again. I like my chocolate cookie to have a bit more chocolate oomph. I love that spellcheck likes the word "oomph".

Now all I need is a little ice cream....

Thanks Spike of Spike Bakes for choosing this one. I'm glad to have tried it.

That compote sounds delish! I bet it was fab with these yummy cookies. :)

I thought the cookies themselves were a little plain. I made sandwiches with cinnamon filling and they were so good and highly addictive.

I thought the cookies were too plain on their own too. With ice cream, however, they are wonderful

First of all, those look fairly normal. (For instance, compared to mine which were a big fail in the rise department, perhaps baking soda gone bad...not taking any chances again and tossed it.) Some people had ones that were hugely risen. I envy. Nonetheless, of course, it's chocolate, and the guys were delighted to eat them, lovely rise or not. I figured I had to get them posted anyway or the old Publish or Perish was going to endanger my status. The only thing endangered now is my rep as a person who can turn out a decent cookie. Don't worry, I apologized to Spike and Dorie. ;-) I so need one of those little scoops you are talking about. Let's see, my next gift-getting occasion is Christmas. Might have to invent a holiday between now and then.

I purposely used dark cocoa, since Dorie mentioned these weren't even very chocolaty. It helped. These were definitely best like a whoopie pie.

I think these would make a better sandwich cookie than a stand alone.

At least yours didn't stick! They look wonderful Jules! People are saying "ice cream sandwich cookies" - never thought of that.... but I added choco chips and espresso to boost the chocolate flavor (which helped some). Mmm compote!

Ice cream with these cookies is a great idea! I think it would really dress them up!

Well, they look tasty, anyway! I haven't made these yet (mostly because the early reports weren't too compelling), but I think they would be great as ice cream sandwiches.
