TWD: Blueberry Sour Cream Ice Cream

Yeah ice cream!  We love ice cream!  As a matter of fact, this has been quite the ice cream summer for us.  We broke out the Cuisinart, and each of us, in rotation, has chosen a "flavor of the week."  The husband was amenable and "chose" this flavor for one of his weeks.  Thanks!

This was another Dorie recipe that I really wanted to like.  I think the blueberry world conspired against me a little.  The sweetness and sheer blueberryness of the berries plays a huge factor in the finished product.  While mine was a lovely blue/purple color, it had a decidedly sour flavor.  The lemon zest and juice and sour cream were stronger flavors than the berries.  Bummer.  Mind you, we still ate it.  We're not that foolish.

As far as many Dorie recipes go, this one was pretty simple. There was minimal cooking, mixing, and dishes.  I made the mix the night before I churned it.  Just a plug here for the Cuisinart ice cream maker.  We've used it over and over this summer.  It's been great fun and it's amazingly easy to use.  All for under $50, too!

I may try this recipe again and cut down on the lemon portion.  I've also seen some successes with frozen berries.  If at first you don't succeed....

Here's a blurry shot of the ice cream with some whole berries that I popped in at the end.  Note the lovely purple color.

Here's a much less blurry shot of the scooped ice cream.

Thanks to Dolores of Chronicles in Culinary Curiosity  for choosing this week's recipe.  Next up:  Granola Grabbers courtesy of Michelle of Bad Girl Baking.

Your ice cream looks fabulous! It is very hard to take a picture of this, at least I found it to be so at any rate! Wasn't it delicious though!

The ice cream is beautiful, but I think I'd find it sour as well. I'm just not that big a fan of sour cream. When I make it, I may try it with yogurt...

UUHHHH!!! I wish I had thought of that - whole berries in the ice cream - an extra level of flavor. Great Job.

Sorry you weren't crazy about the ice cream. I really loved it, but maybe my berries were just different. I also used lime instead of lemon, but less than was called for. It looks lovely, however!

looks so rich and creamy!! i always use frozen wild blueberries because their flavor is so much better than almost any fresh blueberry i can come across. plus then i always have them on hand. love your whole berries visual!

It definitely get a tang from the sour cream and lemon but I loved it! My hubs on the other hand liked it but the aftertaste was a bit much for him. Next time I'll cut the sour cream and see if that helps. Your ice cream looks delish! Great job!

very pretty, isn't it? I really like the idea of those whole blueberries thrown in at the end...that just really sends it over the edge. I tend to like sour/sweet flavors, so this was a big hit here...and our fresh blueberries were nice and ripe and sweet with a full flavor. I think it makes a big difference if your blueberries are the right amount of ripe! Happy to hear you enjoyed seeing my blender...a touch of old home week.

The interview went pretty well, thanks for asking. They've started contacting my references, which I take as a good sign.

I bought an electric ice cream maker and it still tells me to use rock salt! D'oh!

I agree with you that the recipe needed more berries, and that the sour cream was probably the strongest flavor. Hope your second effort is more palatable to you!

:)

We're a big Cuisinart family, too -- very reliable brand.

I love that you still ate it. I cut down on the sour cream and citrus and I thought it helped.

Your ice cream looks beautiful! I am dying to know if your love your Cusinart ice cream maker? I really enjoyed the KA ice cream maker BUT would love a back-up ice cream maker since waiting 15 hours before making another batch of any ice cream feels like forever sometimes =D

What a great idea to throw in some blueberries at the end - it looks so pretty! Definitely make it again without as much sour cream. It's much better that way.

An ice cream a week?? That is SUCH a good idea! I like my Cuisinart maker but find I need to pull the ice cream out at 15 mins or less even though the manual says 20. When I go to 20, it comes out grainy. Do you find the same thing? Love the whole berries in there.

The whole berries make this ice cream even prettier!
