TWD: Chocolate Pudding

Mmmmm.  Chocolate.  Mmmmmm.  Pudding.  How can you miss with creamy, chocolatey goodness?  Well, let me tell you how.

You take wonderful premium ingredients.  You use your mega food processor.  You stir and stir and stir.  You put it in the fridge.  And then, you serve chocolate soup.

I'm not sure what happened.  I tweaked a tad, but I can't figure how my one ingredient change would have stopped it from setting up.  I used Lindt Excellence Intense Orange.  (not endorsing the website, just using them for an example).  It was only a 3.5 ounce bar, so I finished out the rest of the five ounces with chocolate chips.  The other change I made was out of laziness.  I just dumped the finished pudding into one big bowl instead of individual ramekins.  It was chilled overnight, so it did have plenty of time to set up.  I followed the directions on the stir time just before the last whirl in the processor, but perhaps I could have gone longer.  See how it actually looks pudding-like.  Trick photography.  And yes, that is Cool Whip on top.  Or Cool wHip if you are Stewie.

On the plus side, soupy though it was, it tasted amazing.  The boy wasn't so fond of the orange/chocolate combo, but the rest of us loved it.  The girl and I finished the boy's dessert.  The girl even asked for it after dinner tonight.  The husband and I brainstormed some other options which included pouring it over pound or angel food cake, dipping fresh fruit into it, or just eating it with a spoon.  We're still debating.

I will try this again using plain chocolate, ramekins, and a longer stirring time.  We'll see how it goes.  Thanks Melissa for choosing this recipe.  Oh!  And Dorie actually has this one online so you can try it out for yourself.

Coming up next week:  Amanda from Like Sprinkles on a Cupcake chose Cherry Rhubarb Cobbler.  Yeah!  Rhubarb!  I love rhubarb!

Well, what do you supposed happened? Hmmm...maybe the cornstarch was flat? That was the thickener, right? I kept stirring and stirring and thought maybe mine wasn't good either and then all of a sudden, and I mean All. of. a. Sudden. it all came together and I had to get it off the flame fast. I love all your ideas of way to use that pudding...very creative. Nice post.

Chocolate soup really doesn't sound bad at all. It'd make a killer milkshake base.

Wow I love the sound of the orange/chocolate combo! I can taste it right now!

Hey, chocolate soup doesn't sound so bad!

I LOVE chocolate and orange together so it sounds good to me regardless of the consistency. I like the milkshake idea but, if you eat it with fruit, you can pretend it is healthy!

Thickened or not, it looks delicious...mine thickened up almost TOO fast, but who knows what will happen next time...

maybe you didn't cook it long enough?? heck if I know...I'm just lucky I got mine made at all! The chocolate orange sounds so good though - do try it as an icecream base...I would imagine that would work!

Sorry it didn't turn out, but I looks good! Probably try stirring longer over heat to get the egg yolks and corn starch going. Really need to wait for the "blurps" :)

Chocolate soup, oh man! I bet it was delicious but that is disappointing too. I hope it works better next time!

Hmmmm...chocolate soup sounds pretty good to me! :o) Mine got very thick on the stove...too thick, I think. Pouring it over things sounds like a mighty tasty idea.

Chocolate soup? What a trendsetter! ;) I love the chocolate/orange combo!

My any chance, did you lick your spoon? I heard that the saliva can digest the starch from a post in another board when people were having difficulties with liquidy pastry cream. Extremely vigous whisking can also disrupt the starch according to CI. I'm sure your pudding would have made an amazing chocoalte sauce though!

I'm totally with you when it comes to chocolate + orange. I used to be obsessed with those Terry's chocolate orange!

How frustrating that your pudding didn't turn out the way you'd hoped. I saw on Laurie's blog (Quirky Cupcake) that hers didn't set either, so she turned it into ice cream.

Huh...chocolate soup, eh? What a bummer. Bonus points, though, for the Family Guy reference and the good spirits after the whole ordeal. :)

That's too bad about your pudding not setting up. I love the idea of dipping fruit in it though, like a chocolate fondue. :)

It's soup, and it's orange -- it must be healthy! Eat as much as you want, with no guilt!

Sorry that your pudding didn't set--you have such wonderful ideas for it though, you may discover something that will become a family favorite in its own right :)

Hhhmmmm, chocolate soup? or chocolate sauce for ice cream? :)

Good luck if you try it again, looks like you've got lots of good suggestions.

Too bad about the soup, but chocolate soup doesn't sound like such a bad thing, come to think of it!

I've heard that chocolate chips can sometimes be a problem because they are made from softer, runnier chocolate -- but it sounds like you didn't use that much of them so maybe that wasn't it. Maybe you just needed to turn up the heat a little and keep cooking? Better luck next time and enjoy your soup!

glad you still liked the soup anyway. that orange chocolate sounds pretty good.

Yes, it's rather funny that while our choccy puddings didn't set well we still enjoyed them so much! I love your idea of the pudding with poundcake.

I wish I could blame mine on the heat factor, but I do believe it is because I goofed and measured volume instead of weight. I think that was the difference, at least for mine.
I am just glad to know that I am not the only one with chocolate soup - but it sure was delicious! Look forward to trading stories in the future...

Oh, the ways you can drizzle that delicious chocolate pudding onto dessert options! YUM! I was wondering if the cornstarch was flat too? Orange chocolate should have not affected the pudding for thickening. Your ideas for uses are killer! =D

I love the taste of chocolate and orange! Your pudding sure looks great in the photo. That has happened to me as well int the past and I suspect it was because I didn't let the pudding cook enough on the stove. The idea of dipping fresh fruit in the chocolate sounds delcious!

The orange chocolate is always good to me lol. I am still thinking that maybe different climates can contribute to maybe the soupy puddings that happened. Or maybe a little longer stirring? I am happy that you still liked it and look forward to ready your post next week! Funny....'your trick photography' lol.
